It's also worth pointing out that many new AV receivers from Denon, Onkyo, and others include very good scalers that can scale any HDMI input signal (480p/720p) and output a 1080i signal over HDMI for use with and HD Fury/1080i RPTV. Even many of the lower-cost models now have scalers. Some are inexpensive enough, it could be a very attractive option, and of course if you're also looking for an audio upgrade, then you could kill two birds with one stone.
Examples:
Onkyo HT-RC260 - ~$320
Denon AVR-791 - ~$500
Of course, there are other models and used equipment that will do the same. Check the documentation for details.

That's a very good point SC.
At about $170 the Atlona AT-HD560 will be cheapest way to convert 720p to 1080i, but for about $150 more you can get a full blown HDMI receiver like the Onkyo HT-RC260. Perfect for someone looking to upgrade to HDMI lossless audio anyway. Or as you said, someone may already have the feature in their existing HDMI receiver.
At the other end of the spectrum video processors like the DVDO iScan Duo (~$1000) and Lumagen Radiance (~$2500+) are available and will do considerably more.
All depends on what else you may need and the quality of the scaling you expect.

|
|
Hi I need your help please.
I have a Apple TV, Atlona AT-HD560, and HDFURY3, and rear projection television
Currently the HD fury 3 works great converting an HDMI blue ray player to component based rear projection TV outputting 1080i
Now I have an Apple TV that outputs 720p, and the Atlona AT-HD560, which was recommended to use with Apple TV and the HDFury 3.
However I have no picture. Apparently the Atlona AT-HD560 automatically outputs to your display resolution but may not do so to the HDFURY.
However I cannot adjust the settings as when I push the menu button on the Altona as nothing appears on the screen. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks |

Let's try the following: Open your HDFury3's DIP switch cover and set DIP switches 7 & 8 to OFF.
Reset the Atlona as follows:
(from the Atlona HD-560 users manual)
To reset the unit to its default settings:
• Press and hold the menu button
• Unplug the power supply from the device
• Wait 5 second
• Plug the power back in to the device
• The unit should be reset to its original settings
It also says:
3. Automatically detect the factory setting of the connected display and output the corresponding resolution and refresh rate, when the NATIVE output is selected.
It doesn't tell us in the manual if this is the factory default or not. If it is the Atlona should detect the 1080i EDID we set in the HDFury3 by turning off DIP switches 7&8.
Give this a try.

|

Dear Jemery:
Thank you for your suggestion. I want you to know I appreciate it!
Sadly it did not resolve the issue. There was a flicker on the screen momentarily but that was all.
I tried to reset several times and I also triple checked cable set up. When I unplugged the HDMI from Altona HD-560 out and put back into blue ray HDMI out. The picture came back instantly. I left the dip switch with 7 & 8 turned off for now. I was now thinking of attaching the Atlona HD-560 to a regular HDMI monitor to see if I can see the menu to verify that the mode is on 1080i. Other than that any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Should I leave dip switch 7 & 8 turned off?
I look forward to your response.
Thank You
Phil |

Yes leave DIP switch 7 & 8 OFF.
You may have to do what you said. Set it up on another HDMI TV for 1080i and switch it over to yours.
Just to verify can you please give me the DIP switch setting for all the switches in your HDFury3 and what's the model number of your TV? |

Dear Jeremy:
The problem is solved!
The Atlona HD-560's default is native mode and for some reason does not see the HDFURY 3 's native mode.
The solution thanks to you is to put dip switch 7 & 8 to the off position and then go temporarily to any standard HDMI display and attach the Atlona HD-560 AS WELL AS AN IMPUT DEVISE such as a DVD player. The Menu of the Atlona HD-560 will not come up on the display unless you add an input devise.
Reset the Atlona HD-560's default from native to 1080i. Then plug back the Atlona HD-560 back into the HDFURY 3 and add your Apple TV second generation into the Atlona HD-560. Connect the HDFURY 3 into your rear projection television, and your good to go.
The Apple TV that normally outputs in 720P now displays on a rear projection at 1080i and it looks great!
Thank you so much for your help on this. I want you to know I appreciate this!! I do not think I would have resolved it otherwise.
Regards
Phil |

Phil! Thank you for this information. It will help others get everything up and running. I just ordered an Atlona myself to test with.
Do you remember what resolution you had the DVD player set to? |

The DVD player was not set to anything I know of. Just a standard DVD. However, for whatever reason the Atlona HD-560 did not display it's menu until the DVD was plugged in. The TV I used to convert the Atlona HD-560 was a rear projection with HDMI "in" that also only displays in 1080i. However, this TV had a HDMI "in," so the HDFURY 3 was not required. After resetting it, I then went back to my rear projection Toshiba 61" without HDMI, added the HDFURY 3, the Atlona HD-560, and an Apple TV second generation, and it worked like a charm!
